Top 10 Pro Tools Tips for the Newbie

August 18, 2008 – 11:23 pm by Jonathan Grand

Update: 20 Intermediate Pro Tools Tips now posted!

During my years of experience in the field, I’ve had tons of people asking for advice. Specially advice on DAW systems – mainly Pro Tools, because it’s the industry standard  - and because Digital Audio Workstations can get complicated.

The tips I keep repeating are rarely heard, and then they come back with more serious problems – because they didn’t listen the first time. It’s not because they are stupid, but because it’s normal to be excited about this new investment, thinking Digidesign is just like any other company who makes products that “just work”. Unfortunately products that “just work” are a very rare breed in today’s technological age, so people need to be prepared… More…

August 13, 2008 – 4:56 am by Jonathan Grand

Worthless software for overpriced hype device, or a little musical revolution in disguise?

iZotope iDrum for iPhone and iPod Touch (so many i’s) allows the sketching of beats on an everyday portable device, which could prove useful for songwriting. The application makes beat-making available to everyone with its simple interface.

“The iDrum application takes advantage of unique features of the iPhone platform — users can tap virtual pads to create rhythms, shake the handset to clear patterns, and use slide and flick gestures to navigate the application’s interface. Immersive, colorful visuals show the relationship between different sounds in the beat, allowing users to create new rhythms by creating visual patterns. Using a special companion application, beats can even be turned into ringtones for iPhone.” More…

Like a fast growing teenager from a broken home, the music industry has been tortured by painful and unexpected changes, finally learning how to survive on its own. Today, major labels are the melancholic parents in denial, missing the old days of sense of ownership. They are still in control, suffocating the market transformations as much as they can. But they are losing the game, and they know it: capitalism in the hands of the little ones is a doomsday device against the corporations - More…

Continuing the point I tried to make with The Most Discussed Article on Moozek Yet, back in February, I believe this is something a lot more important to us as music professionals, than CDs mastered at -5 dB with 6% of sample clipping. Amen? Read on…(trailer included) More…

And Chinese are one of the most avid music consumers in the world. But how does Google plan to do that? According to Jacqui Cheng at Ars Technica: More…
